I'm just wondering what was your favourite sculpture and why?

Hi Brian. My name is Bruce Woollatt. I've been doing some 1:15 scale dinosaur sculptures for the London Regional Children's Museum in London Ontario, a place much to far away from Mesozoic fossil-bearing strata. I've also done a life-size head of Parasaurolophus for said institution. Working life-size is certainly a different experience if you're doing something bigger than a hatchling. What's the largest critter you've tackled? What's the largest you would attempt?

On a slightly more technical note, what is your view of the ( apparently) on-going debate on the forelimb stance of ceratopsians? I started on a 1:15 Triceratops in front end sprawl mode after reading Johanson(?) and Ostrom but after reading Paul and Christiansen(? again I'm not sure of the other author involved-if you don't already have these refs, I can find them for you), I'm not so sure. Maybe I should be getting out the old hacksaw and preparing for corrective surgery? Any advice?

Lately, I've been sculpting dinosaurs from my Ceramics class. All of them are really bad though...Hopefully my Spinosaurus pair will come out okay. My Psittacosaurus isn't half bad. Getting the bipedal ones to balance is hard, and I usually have to include some sort of base or tree attached to their side to have them stand. Anyways, what medium do you usually work in?

Where are these T-rex's you mentioned above on display? I've only seen one of your peices in the flesh (in the fibreglass?) - the Albertosaurus for The Greatest Show Unearthed. I've seen some photos other works - I particularly like the outdoor Tyrell Albertosaurus. I'd like to see these T-rex sculptures.

Thanks for the kind words. I've always believed dinosaurs were more interesting in groups. There's so much more they can be doing! I'd be very interested in talking to you about the T-rex vs. Triceratops sculpture. Let's discuss it. I'm in the SVP directory if you have one handy. I'll visit your website and see if I can track you down.
I'm glad you consider looking at a dinosaur sculpture a reward. I'd have a tough time of it if people like you weren't digging things out of the ground so I could sculpt them. Thanks, and keep it up.

I am a firm believer that desire is the only prerequisite for choosing a path in life. I have seen people with lots of talent go nowhere and I've seen people with marginal natural ability accomplish great things. All you have to do is figure out what you are most passionate about. That's not so easy and it's not unusual to change your mind as the years go by. Pursuit of the sciences is similar to the art in one area: they both require discipline and a lot of work. That's why you have to love it. I am a trained sculptor who went to art school. I use science and spend a great deal of time with scientist but do not presume to call myself one. Likewise, the time required to be a really good scientist makes it difficult to become a really great artist. It's not impossible, just highly exceptional. Try to figure out which side of your brain you like to use more often (left side for analytical, mathmatical, scientific, etc. or right side for the arts, creativity, etc.). That may be a clue.
By the way, just so you know, you have to take zoology before you can specialize in paleontology so you can already be in university for a while before deciding. I you decide on the sciences but still what to develop your artistic side, I recommend you concentrate on drawing. It's essential to draw well for any other visual discipline including sculpture and the latter requires a lot of time, materials, etc. Hope this helps.
